Pedro Poveda Higher Institute of Educational Studies is born in the Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.
On August 9, 2016, the National Council of Higher Education, Science and Technology, of Dominican Republic, approved the establishment of Pedro Poveda Higher Institute of Educational Studies (ISEP, in Spanish) proposed by Poveda Cultural Center, a pioneer in teacher training in the public sector in vulnerable contexts, and educational research, since 1985.

ISEP, inspired by the pedagogical proposal of Pedro Poveda, is born with the mission of "training teachers and advance socio-educational research in a democratic, participatory and holistic educational process, which enables the formation of critical subjects and the construction of significant knowledge, oriented towards an educational change in the country."

Dinorah Garcia Romero, the Director, highlights three priority dimensions in their programs:

  • Training of educators who research their own practice and the contexts in which they are involved.
  • Educational research that emphasizes action and research to transform concepts, practices, academic and social contexts.
  • Formation of social subjects committed to change and innovation in higher education and society.

"These three highlights, says Dinorah Garcia, are the backbone of interdependent processes, actions and decisions of ISEP, to give a transformative sense to the academic task and provide it with a culture that prioritizes learning of complexity, from which educators can learn, interpret and enrich the contributions of science. In addition, they will acquire the necessary competencies to intervene proactively in this turbulent and changing world, the present and the future.” The values to be emphasized are pluralism, ethical-social commitment, educational innovation, equality, teamwork and co-responsibility.

0919-1ISEP also intends to find new ways of doing and dialoguing with the arts. "It is important that educators participating in the academic programs of ISEP rediscover, with a creative attitude, the humanizing power of aesthetics to make Higher Education a place where critical and creative thinking give rise to flexible, innovative and alternative learning," says the Director.

The Academic Proposal of ISEP has been built with contributions from university personnel and from national and international non-governmental organizations; thus its proponents welcome the opportunity to establish partnerships with other institutions. And to foster a joint academic project and a political project in search of the good for everyone. This articulation will be supported by stable ethical frameworks. "We have the challenge of moving towards a new way of thinking and doing at the level of Higher Education in the Dominican Republic," concludes Dinorah Garcia.

In the initial stage ISEP will offer classroom postgraduate studies, master's or other specialty, which will be held at its headquarters in Santo Domingo.

Poveda Cultural Center in the Dominican Republic, which promotes ISEP, assumes the invitation Pedro Poveda made to young professionals who launched the educational movement around the Teresian Association in the early twentieth century: "They should, by all means at their disposal, provide the incomparable benefit of education to all men and women." Today he continues being an inspiration in diverse cultural contexts such as the new ISEP.
